"OVER the years, I've been deeply moved by the people who've told me they wished they could feel inspired and hopeful about America the way people did when my father was president. This sense is even more profound today. That is why I am supporting a presidential candidate in the Democratic primaries, Barack Obama."

And when it comes to judgment, Barack Obama made the right call on the most important issue of our time by opposing the war in Iraq from the beginning.

It is the central issue of this decade -- and we who love this country have to come down on the side that believes that the most important contribution to making the world a better place is NOT to start a war. It is to start a peace.

Wage peace.

This is a must read. It's a very moving letter, and a very powerful endorsement.

Yes, Deron, it really is some endorsement. I am glad it came hot on the heels of the New York Times support of Clinton yesterday. To liken anyone to her father must have taken some doing, but a black man as well, especially to the racists out there who might resent him for his colour, that is courageous and wonderful.

I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them. But for the first time, I believe I have found the man who could be that president — not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans.

I truly hope he wins.

Even people in Africa feel that it is time for change. The rogue foreign policy being practiced by Bush has made the US lose respect among many Africans. Look at Ethiopia and Uganda. The dictators have driven the countries to the ground but since they support the US, they are not held to account. Look at Kenya

What a powerful statement, we have waited a long time for this and the time has come for our country to embrace the power of unity from our citizens to our government, from the White House to our house.

I haven't felt fired up like this in an awful long time!

Great Lady Ms Kennedy!

Say that again, abowhite45, so am I, and I'm not even American...lol. Absolutely marvellous and very timely.

Great seed, Nikwax, thank you.

The US and Great Britain are literally one in the same so I can understand you sentiments.

I lived in Cricklade Fairford England for 4 years and it almost felt like I never left the US. (Almost mainly because of weather and diving on the other side of the road) I definitely felt like I was just another bloke who lived in the beautiful country side of your great country.

Unity has no boundaries, therefore our boarders are expanded and our world enlarged because of the possibilities I believe Barack and the people who rally around can bring.

I'll take Kennedy's endorsement over the NYT's any day of the week.

Hear, hear! She has certainly upstaged them, especially as she didn't have to say anything. Short and to the point. Good for her.

I'm glad to see that this article is currently the most e-mailed on the NYT. I'm guessing it'll be more widely circulated than the NYT's endorsement.

I sincerely hope so, gardentraveler. It would serve them right not to try to manipulate the election.

There is a generation coming of age that is hopeful, hard-working, innovative and imaginative. But too many of them are also hopeless, defeated and disengaged.

I find this to be quite true. Young people are often feeling defeated before they can even enter the political process to make a change.

This is a very powerful piece and probably could not have been published at a better time for Obama. The next few weeks will be really interesting to see what's happening around this country.

That could be because they are not really represented in government, one that appears to be locked in a morass of negative politics, repeating itself over and over. That is enough to get anyone feeling defeated!
